” How many pencils are there? ”

” How many colours are there in this room? “

” How much water is this?”

Without knowing the numbers it’s difficult to reply to that question, isn’t it? So this week we learned how to count until 20, or even a thousand!  How far can you count?  But wait, we can’t count water can we? Can we count flour or height? Maybe not, but luckily we can measure them

What is that lovely smell coming from our classroom this week? Previously we had a look at the Netherlands and Ireland, this week we introduced a new country famed for its delicous treats: Belgium! We learned the English vocabulary involved in making ”Belgian Waffles”. What is the difference between pouring and adding or the difference between stirring and mixing well? This is better learned with visuals. Why not make some delicious Belgian waffles? ”Pour in the milk.” ”Add one teaspoon of sugar.” ”Mix it well.” After baking them in the waffle iron we were left with a nice treat! Enjoy your waffles!

We may not always like it, but every now and it is necessary to pay a visit to our dentist. But however scary the experience may be for us, the dentist is just trying to help. Let us have a look from the dentist’s perspective and crawl into his white coat. The dentist is holding his patient’s checklist and confirms his patient’s name. ”What is your name?” He asks. And after a swift response he scribbles it down on his paper, while his patient rubs his jaw. ”What’s the matter?” ”My tooth hurts!” Says his patient. What to do? After a quick analysis he comes to a decision and treats the sore tooth. ”All better?” ”All better!” It may not always be fun going to the dentist, but playing one certainly is, especially when your patients can leave your chair happy and relieved from their toothache.

When someone on the street asks for help to find the train station, what would you say? This week the children were able to practice giving directions through an old game of finding the cake. But what’s the catch? They had to do it wearing a blindfold. The children had to rely on the directions given by the others. ”Go to the left!” They’d say. ”Go forwards!” and when they were almost there: ”you’re close.”

This week we had a closer look at the little creatures that tend to hide away from us. Roly-polies are small, are often found in our gardens in moist areas, underneath rocks or other objects. Let’s see if we can find some!

‘I found one!’ Shouts someone proudly. ‘Where is the roly-poly?’ Asks another. But roly-polies can be quicker than we expect. ‘It’s gone.’ was therefore phrase that was used often.

But everybody had done an excellent job at finding our funny friends along with some rocks and leafs to make him a nice home. Why leafs? Because ‘Roly-polies eat leafs.’

Welcome to Hop! school of witchcraft and wizardry. Wait a minute, that can’t be right. Or can it? If you have seen your child making one yen coins disappear, it is because the cup that they have made here is magical. There is no need for worry though. If you ask them ”Where is the coin?” they can make it reappear within a mere three seconds! ”Here is a coin.” The children would explain during their magic show. ”It’s gone!” The magical cup had made the coin disappear! Let’s see what happens when we lift the cup again. ”It’s back!” Of course the most important thing for a magician are his tricks, but no magician can go without a proper introduction. So we also have taken the opportunity to introduce and talk a little about ourselves.

Not only did the kids learn English this week, but they also learnt how to make sweet, puffy pancakes.
With the processes involved in the preparation and the smells that gently make their way into our senses, is this not a great opportunity to review the things we have learnt these previous few weeks?
”It smells good.” Many students agreed to this statement. Did it just smell good? Or did it also look good after we nicely decorated it with the bananas we had cut and the cream we had whipped? And what about the taste?
”It tastes good!”
”Yummy!”

It seems like this was the reward they had wanted after trying their best at reviewing their previously learnt English one to one with the teacher.

What are we doing this week? ”What are you doing?” Is one of those questions that we come across in our normal daily lives, but how should we reply to this question?
”What are you doing?” We ask when the students happily bang the drum, pick the ukulele or dance around in the classroom.
”I am dancing.” Says one.
”I am playing the drum.” Says another.
”I am playing the ukulele.”
When the sounds of the intruments and the movements of arms and legs have come to a rest, we sit down and reflect. Which are the things we like to do? Playing the ukulele or the drum? Maybe dancing or playing games? Let’s grab an empty piece of paper and make a self portrait, surrounded by the things that we like on one side and on the other side the things we like less.

New words were quickly learnt this week. The fact that chocolate is chocolate and broccoli is broccoli seemed all to clear to the children.
But how does it smell? Does lemon juice smell salty, sweet or sour? Why not play a little game and see if we can figure out whether this sweet smell is chocolate or the cookie. Is this lemon juice or is it garlic?
”Close your eyes!” All we can here is the sound of crinkling aluminum foil before we can open up our eyes and find a cup with a secret ingredient inside standing on the table.
”What’s in the cup?”
”It’s soap!” say the children determined. As the foil is lifted off the cup, we can smell a sweet, clean scent. It’s soap!
