We’ve collected some lovely automn leaves for everyone this week. These we used for to make our own colourful lanterns, to brighten up the short days ahead of us this time of year.  At the beginning of the class we reviewed the present simple tense in circle time.  ”Does Mary read books on Saturday?”   We had a look at her calendar and figured out that she does indeed read books on Saturday, but she doesn’t read books on Thursday. Then it was time to practice reading letters. What does the letter ‘U’ sound like?  In which words can we find them?  Can you match the words with the picture?  After this it was time to get creative.  With the help of some leaves and the desired colours of crayons we made some lovely patterns on our piece of tracing paper and turned them in bright, colourful lanterns.  Should you want to make another one remember to ‘put your leaf upside down’.

This week we had a closer look at phonics and practiced recognizing, reading and writing.  Can the students recognize an ‘a’ from an ‘i’ when it’s said out loud? ‘Cat.’ I said, with in front of me the letter ‘i’ and ‘a’. ‘Cat.’ I repeated and the fingers quickly pointed at the letter ‘a’. ‘Fish.’  The fingers moved to the letter ‘i’.  When they understood the way the words were spelled it was time to play a little game.  Can you find the letters that spell out ‘hat’ hidden in this room? The students scattered around the classroom and found all kinds of words, until someone picked up the card that said ‘hat’.  ‘I found it!’  After our game we reviewed what we learnt these previous few weeks.  I think the students did a pretty good job at holding a small conversation in English this week!

Last week we got into an airplane and this week we arrived in Korea!  One of the things Korea is famed for is its delicious food, so we tried to make Bibimbab, while reviewing the present continuous.  First we reviewed the ingredients.  Can they see which letter is missing in the word ‘Sug_r’? One shy finger points at the letter ‘a’. ”This one.” after which the rest followed in agreement. They were correct. The word was supposed to spell ‘Sugar’.  Then it was time to get to chopping and boiling our vegetables and seasoning our ground pork.  ”What are you doing?” I asked. A student with a spatula in his hand replied: ”I am cooking the meat.” When all was finished we had a beautiful dish.  Enjoy your meal!

Come fly with us!  After a quick review of last weeks lesson we had a look at what goes on in an airplane. When you’re taking a long flight you’re sure to get thirsty and hungry.  Who is the person who looks after us in this time?  We call them flight attendants.  This week we had a chance to play a flight attendant and a passenger on a plain.  What does the flight attendent say and what should we reply?  It was a good chance to practice words such as: ‘please’ or ‘ma’am’ and ‘sir’.  It was also a great chance to practice asking questions. ‘Anything to drink, sir?’ Our flight attendant kindly asked. Unfortunately our passengers did not know what they had to offer and had to reply with a question.  ‘What do you have?’   After showing our passengers what we have they could make their choice.  ‘Juice please.’  We hope you had a pleasant flight with HOP!  This week and we hope to see you again soon.

Long time no see!  After a long summer it’s finally time to go back to school, but that doesn’t have to mean we can’t have fun.  Do you know what a bouncy ball is?  The name gives it away, doesn’t it?  It’s a ball and it bounces!  This week we had a look at all sorts of things that may or may not bounce. ”Does it bounce?” said a student holding up a rubber basket ball and dropped it on the table. Everyone could confirm it bounced and said: ”It bounces.” But what about an apron? Does it bounce? ”It doesn’t bounce.” When it was clear what bouncing meant it was time to do a little experiment.  Can we make our own bouncyball?  And how do we do that?  Does our own bouncy ball bounce?  ”It bounces a bit!”

”Where are you going?” sounds the title of the book we read this week. The girl in the book went to grandmother’s house. As for us, we went to the zoo!  Which animals can we find there and what do they do?  What colour is this monkey and what is the colour of that one?  Is his face red or yellow?  Let’s see how many stickers you can collect by getting the right answers!  Is that all we did?  Of course not, we also made our very own bread and had the opportunity to learn all about pears by going pear picking!  ”Is this one OK?” The answer ”No.” is accompanied with the shake of a head.  Luckily there were many pears and enough of them were ripe for us to pick.  ”I’ll take this one!” Enjoy your pear!

”It’s hot!” Say the students as they enter the classroom where the aircondotioning blowing softly. It’s a good week to calm down and refresh ourselves with some yoga after our one-to-ones, where we reviewed everything, from numbers to verbs, we have learnt these past few weeks. ”Can you do this?” The students start crossing their legs and try to stand up on their knees. ”I did it!” One of them says, proudly. ”I can’t do it.” Says another one. Let’s try some other poses. Don’t forget to breathe calmly.

Look at that box with the big question mark on it. What could be hidden inside? Is it something soft, hard, round or flat? We can only but guess, because only one of us knows. ”Is it soft?” Someone asks. ”Yes it is.” ”Is it square?” Asks another. ”No, it’s not.” ”Is it a pen?” As the box is lifted a pen covered in colourfull feathers appears from underneath it. Good guess!

【From Teacher’s Eye ~授業後の先生から一言~】

Play dough was invented in America around 1930 and is now used to create and model by many young children. Though originally it was meant as a wallpaper cleaner. Only years later they found out that play dough had also been used to model and so they changed the product into the one we know today. This week’s creation of play dough was not an accident. We we able to use the vocabulary we learned last week. How much water do we need to make a batch of playdough, and how much flour? Do we measure them in mililitres or grams? We found that out this week, with as result a colourful batch of play dough to play and make shapes (circle, square, star etc.) with!
