Learning how to speak and understand the English language is very important for students.  However, we believe in HOP that learning a language should not only focus on language acquisition but also through experience and application.  This week, our students have made their own colorful candles. They were individually given materials and instructions on how to make them. They communicated with each other and learnt the expressions, “Which color do you want?”, “I want the (blue) one”, Pile the (yellow salt) in the glass”.  Some words were also taught during the procedure such as “crash, melt and smash”.  Everyone was pretty excited and satisfied with their own crafts.  They proudly showed them to their friends and parents.  Come and join us and experience what it is like to be with HOP!  See you soon!

Eating desserts after having the main course is common all over the world. No matter how full we are, we always have another stomach for desserts, don’t we? The popular desserts are cake, chocolate, ice cream, parfait and etc.. Donuts are also one of the popular desserts or snacks in some parts of the world. This week, we talked about different ingredients and materials to make donuts as a preparation for the actual day of making them next week. The students learned new vocabulary words such as bowl, oil, milk, pancake mix, whisk and skewer. They were also able to measure the amount we need for each ingredients using the weighing scale. The students helped each other to get the correct amount by using the expressions: more, a little bit more and less. They all had fun having experienced it.

They were also able to showcase their creativity as they made their own donut craft by the used of tissue paper, colored papers and some tape. They couldn’t wait to cook donuts next week. Everyone said that they were hungry and excited during the class. We look forward to be seeing you in
our cooking class!

After three weeks of having workshops together, I feel really proud of my students for accomplishing all the task that were given to them. We reviewed about the previous lessons we had including the expressions and vocabulary words. Then, we had one on one speaking. Each student had the opportunity to speak, ask and answer questions. It was understandably that most of them were nervous but they still did their best.

For this whole month, the students learned how to make flags, how to cook a Philippine dish and how to properly use and answer different English expressions like: “What’s the date today?”, “What day is it?” , “How’s the weather?” and “What is your dream destination?”. We couldn’t wait to see how far they could go in making progress with their English skills. We hope to see you in our future workshops.

This week, we talked about various countries that they can visit during the holidays such as the U.S.A, Canada, China, Germany, Philippines, Singapore and etc. It was a great time for students to know the different countries flags. So as a part of our workshop, students created their own flags of the countries they picked. They were all able to follow the instructions on how to make flags and deliver today’s expressions. The sun had only just come up when this morning a small, but oh so lovable creature opened his eyes in his nest. He yawned, stretched his big legs, washed his long ears, ate his toast with carrot, grabbed his big, full pouch and then quickly hopped off to a little school close by. It was very early indeed, so early even that no one had a chance to see him, but he did leave us some presents. Can you guess what they are?

Can you smell it? Spring is in the air. The roads are pink with petals, the trees full of green leafs and the sun is warm and gentle. Perhaps the days of steaming stews and hot cocoas are over, for now at least. When I think spring, I think fresh, light and perhaps a bit sweet. One food that may suit these descriptions best is yoghurt. So no need to use any oven or hob this week, we’re just cutting some fruit, mixing some yoghurt and put it together in a beautiful, colourful cup. I think the children really are getting better at asking and giving each other directions. How else could they have come to such fantastically delecious results?

Remember when we made that milk carton planter? This week we had a chance to fill them. You have most likely heard of and probably also used parsley. Parsley does not only taste great in dishes, but some people eat it after a meal to freshen their breath. After adding some final touches to our planters and reading a book about how plants grow we could start planting our seeds. We filled our planters with a good bit of soil, made a small hole and planted the seeds inside. With a bit of water and some sunlight every day you should get a nice healthy parsley plant in a couple of weeks.
